Citation Share: The Core Metric of AI Search Visibility

Most brands measure AI search with the wrong number. Impressions, rankings, and referral traffic all miss the point, because an AI answer rarely produces a click. The metric that actually captures AI visibility is citation share — and if you track one thing, track this.
What citation share is
Citation share is the percentage of AI answers, across a defined set of buying questions, in which your brand is cited or named — measured against the total, and against your competitors. It answers the only question that matters in AI search: when a buyer asks, how often are you in the answer?
It comes in two useful forms:
- Absolute citation share — of all answers for your tracked prompts, what share include you.
- Competitive share of voice — of all brands named across those answers, what share are you.
Why it beats rankings and traffic
A ranking assumes a list the user scrolls. An AI answer names three or four brands and stops — being "position six" is invisible. And because most AI influence never becomes a click, analytics under-reports it badly: a buyer can read an answer that names you and arrive later as direct traffic. Citation share sidesteps both problems by measuring the answer itself.
How to calculate it
- Fix a prompt set. Ten to thirty real buying questions in your category. Keep it stable so results stay comparable.
- Run them across engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Copilot — each retrieves differently, so measure per engine.
- Score each answer. Record whether you are named, which competitors are named, and which sources are cited.
- Compute the share. Your named answers ÷ total answers = absolute citation share. Your mentions ÷ all brand mentions = share of voice.
- Re-measure on a schedule. Monthly, same prompts. Direction matters more than any single snapshot.

What a "good" number looks like
There is no universal benchmark, because it is relative to your category and competitors. The useful comparisons are against the brands named alongside you, and against your own number last month. For context, most brands start near zero — a large majority of companies are absent from early-stage AI discovery entirely — so simply appearing is progress.
Where the sources come from matters too
Citation share tells you whether you are in the answer. The source breakdown tells you why. If Reddit and review sites dominate the citations, on-site work alone will not move your share — you have to earn presence where the answers are sourced. Tracking that split is what Reddit-citation tools automate, and it is why Reddit gets cited over brand content in the first place.

Frequently asked questions
What is citation share?
Citation share is the percentage of AI answers, across a defined set of buying questions, in which your brand is cited or named — measured against the total and against your competitors.
How is citation share different from ranking?
A ranking assumes a scrollable list. An AI answer names three or four brands and stops, so being 'position six' is invisible. Citation share measures the answer itself, not a list position.
How do I calculate citation share?
Fix a prompt set of real buying questions, run them across each engine, record whether you're named and which competitors are, then divide your named answers by the total. Segment by engine and re-measure monthly.
What is a good citation share?
There's no universal benchmark — it's relative to your category and competitors. Compare against the brands named alongside you and against your own number last month. Most brands start near zero.
Why not just use Google Analytics?
Most AI influence never becomes a click. A buyer can read an answer that names you and arrive later as direct traffic, so analytics badly under-reports AI impact.
